Jeff Greenfield, Media elitist on liberal “elitism”

Jeff Greenfield  a fine up standing member of the media who…….” is a Senior Political Correspondent for CBS News, who contributes to the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, The Early Show, CBS News Sunday Morningand other news broadcasts, as well as”  ……..has written an awful bigoted article for slate ….Obama and Orwell What the master Brit can teach Democrats about elitism.

Greenfield Asks why Obama and other democrats can not seem to relate to the American proletariat, the joe six pack, and the nascar dads. And instead of placing the blame where it belongs, on the republican slime machines efforts to paint liberals as effete snobs and the acquiescence of Main Stream Media (MSM) figures like the acclaimed Mr Greenfield—-Greenfield instead offers us an Orwell critique of British socialists and asks us to “Substitute liberal or progressive for socialist, and the text often reads as though Orwell were covering American politics today.”

What follows is a run down of every stereotypical red herring description of what a liberal is that the right wing talking heads work so hard to keep the idea of identification with liberalism distasteful to the “Real working-class folks” who would benefit the most from American liberalism………who ought to be flocking it its support.”

Greenfield writes……

“……..One key to the movement’s lack of popularity, Orwell argues, is its supporters. “As with the Christian religion,” he writes, “the worst advertisement for Socialism is its adherents.” Then he wheels out the heavy rhetorical artillery. The typical socialist, according to Orwell, “is either a youthful snob-Bolshevik who in five years time will quite probably have made a wealthy marriage and been converted to Roman Catholicism, or, still more typically, a prim little man with a white-collar job, usually a secret teetotaler, and often with vegetarian leanings … with a social position he has no intention of forfeiting. … One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words ‘Socialism’ and ‘Communism’ draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, ‘Nature Cure’ quack, pacifist and feminist in England.” (Think “organic food lover,” “militant nonsmoker,” and “environmentalist with a private jet” for a more contemporary list.)

“………..Orwell also rails against the condescension many on the left display toward those they profess to care most about. Describing a gathering of leftists in London, he says, “every person there, male and female, bore the worst stigmata of sniffish middle-class superiority. If a real working man, a miner dirty from the pit, for instance, had suddenly walked into their midst, they would have been embarrassed, angry and disgusted; some, I should think, would have fled holding their noses.”…….””

Greenfield blames the lack of acceptance of liberalism by the people that would benefit the most on the supporters of liberalism.

While there is no doubt that Liberalism is stigmatized by an association with “far out freaky people”,  the very reason this association has become the overriding way that many Americans see Democrats is BECAUSE of articles like this. The truth is that Americans by large majority’s hold liberal views and support liberal policies

It is a sad testimony that “Journalists” like Greenfield  think passing off stereotypes is a substitute for plying their craft. instead of giving us just one more version of the script supplied by the hate-mongering right wing swamp why wont greenfield instead talk about what liberalism is truly about?

Why not offer a discussion on how Hill and Barack want to lower taxes on the middle class, provide health care for all, and create opportunity for example? Is it to boring. If boredom is the problem how about offering an article on why Repub/cons have become stigmatized as the party of the very rich and their lower and middle class stooges?
